Lviv Railway Station
When the war in Ukraine broke out, I was on assignment at the Hungarian-Ukrainian border, and I saw the first refugees arriving by train. I noticed that trains from Ukraine were departing from the central station in Lviv, in the west of the country.
As I watched these exhausted refugees arrive in Hungary and read the newspapers, I learned that this same station had become a gateway in and out of the war in Ukraine following the Russian invasion.
I sought to bear witness to the stories of these refugees, students, cashiers, IT specialists and elderly people who had to leave their homes and their lives behind for an uncertain future. These are stories of people grappling with madness, heroism, sadness and love. Ultimately, they are people like you and me, whose lives were turned upside down overnight.
