Colonne lumineuse by Jean-Gérard Mattio for the Caisse d’Épargne bank in Toulon
design, archives

Designed by the artist and interior decorator Jean-Gérard Mattio for the headquarters of the Caisse d’Épargne in Toulon — built by Alfred Henry, Jacques Chapon, Jean Beauregard and Émile David in 1969 — this luminous column was added to the collections of the Métropole Toulon Provence Méditerranée and placed in the villa Noailles’ collection in 2017.

Made entirely of Plexiglas, it adorned the large staircase which led to the conference room on the first floor. Jean-Gérard Mattio oversaw all of the building’s decorations, commissioned by its president Labrosse to serve as a manifesto of the prestige and modernity of his bank. The artist created several works himself, including a ceramic panel which is currently on display at the Galerie du Canon as a part of the exhibitions A Summer in Toulon. He also called upon other artists, amongst who we find Christiane Carielle, Roger Capron, G-Y Rolland, but also the painters Henri Pertus et Gilbert Louage who each created a tapestry which will also be on display at the Galerie du Canon this summer.
