Sonder
Sonder explores masculinity through the prism of domestic life, focusing on the relationships between male family members and the spaces and objects that characterise their daily lives. Set between London and Taichung, two culturally distinct cities that have shaped my own identity, the project examines how masculinity is expressed, negotiated and reinvented within the home.
Often considered a feminine space, the home contrasts with traditionally masculine domains such as the workplace or the sports field. By focusing on the domestic sphere, this series challenges these divisions and reveals how consideration, intimacy and vulnerability can exist in male relationships behind closed doors.
Combining a documentary approach with staging, I worked with several families, using their homes as a stage to explore the boundary between the natural and the represented. Everyday objects, clothing and gestures convey a personal, family and intercultural heritage.
The title “Sonder” means to realise that every passer-by leads a life as rich and complex as your own. It sums up the spirit of universality and shared human experiences that animates this series, highlighting how personal stories transcend cultural boundaries and invite collective reflection.
