THE GRAND PRIX DESIGN PARADE TOULON VAN CLEEF & ARPELS

Willie Morlon, France
PLACO STUDIOLO

Placo Studiolo is a Mediterranean palace chamber. A dreamed palace as one might see in pictures or museums but without precious materials, no marble or gold. Only plasterboard from floor to ceiling, insulation polystyrene, and construction straps. A marvelous entrance hall simulated by a building craftsman, an enthusiastic admirer of the ideal of Facteur Cheval, constructed in his own living room with cheap materials bought from the nearby DIY store. The contrast between real and simulated architecture is constant. The décor thus offers two levels of interpretation: one purely decorative, inviting contemplation of meticulous craftsmanship and marveling at decorative details. The other, critical, intended to highlight the relationship between material and its use and to reflect on our mode of production. The work of the artisan-architect is emphasized as a testament to knowledge and the joy of creation. It counters a construction system based on profit and speed of execution at the expense of decorative art. The artisan’s hand reclaims the interior space as a realm of popular expression.

THE VISUAL MERCHANDISING AWARD by Chanel

Romain Joly & Lisa Bravi, France
MISTRALOU

In the intimacy of a Provencal villa, a fleeting and mischievous wind, the mistral, quietly enters the reading room. Like a delicate breath, it slips through partially open windows, brushing against the walls and caressing the furniture. The padded walls seem to shiver upon its arrival, as if they are about to come alive. Through the windows, one can glimpse turbulent landscapes, awakened by the mistral.

At the heart of this delicate atmosphere, the furniture, crafted from threaded buttons, appears suspended in time. The old layer of tapestry, once hidden behind walls, reappears sporadically, like a reminder of ancient tales whispered through time by the mistral. This powerful and characteristic wind of the region thus becomes the master of the space, shaping and sculpting a landscape of textiles and buttons.

THE PRIZE OF THE MOBILIER NATIONAL

Anaïs Fernon, France
In the freshness of the situation

On this June morning, on the second floor of the former Bishop’s Palace in Toulon, the small room at the back, facing due East, is bathed in Mediterranean sunlight. The atmosphere will soon become scorching. Along the alignment of the corridor and the narrow Garibaldi street, a gentle breeze passes through. Everything revolves around the interface, the window. The popular Provencal bead curtain is reinvented here. Two layers of curtains succeed each other. The first, a fire-resistant mosquito net, is adorned with aluminum mirror pendants. It reflects direct rays outward and prevents any pests. The second layer, made of linen cords and chalked terracotta bars, is soaked with water drop by drop. The air passing through refreshes into a gentle breeze upon contact with water.

On the walls, the gradient of ochres reveals the rising warm air and invites one to stay close to the glazed ceramic floor. It is pleasant to be in the corner of this water hearth. Listening to the rustling of the air and the splashing of water nourishes the idea of freshness. Without a doubt, we know where we are. A situated interior. In contrast to hermetically sealed conditioned rooms, the window is wide open, with sensations connected to the site, materials, and colors echoing the Var region. The decor is not layers of fiction but depths that amplify the perception of reality. Far from the narrative of a better elsewhere, it is time to refresh the already here.

THE PUBLIC PRIZE OF THE CITY OF TOULON

Clément Rouvier, France
ON AIR

In this Mediterranean cradle, where the sun infinitely caresses the sea, awakens a room, a haven woven with notes inspired by legends that once trod these lands bathed in light. Inspired by the mythical passage of the Rolling Stones at Villa Nellcote in Villefranche, this project transcends time, creating an enchanting sonic canvas of the magic of the Azure Coast.

At the heart of this musical paradise, a totem reigns, a silent guardian of ancient melodies, exhaling light, wind, and sound, weaving connections with the mystical, evoking the darkness where the Rolling Stones gave life to the iconic “Exile On Main Street”. From this totem chest emerges a floral composition with hints of punk hairstyles. Fragments of crushed brick stretch humbly at the foot of this structure, from which fossilized guitars emerge, ready to resurrect musical treasures buried in time.

In the center, a lithophone, a mineral reliquary of the Mediterranean, caresses stones cradled by the waves. On this very structure, crafted with bamboo tinted in the shadow of the cosmos, an organic silhouette unfolds, like a being walking towards the light. It is a visual symphony of connection between earth and sky, where the Mediterranean essence comes alive, vibrating to the rhythm of an animal presence advancing towards radiance.

Cymbals, shooting stars, capture and reflect light, creating dancing bursts of magic. The walls, coated in olive green, become a visual score, a graphic symphony where whispers of the past and notes of the present intertwine in timeless harmony.

Like a sanctuary, this space is a music studio in full metamorphosis with Mediterranean roughness. The different instruments present in the room, born from the raw materials of this coastline and gleaned objects, await to be played. It is a performance where these objects come together to express themselves, seeking tonal reciprocity in the eternal echo of the Mediterranean.
