Perfected Perfecto
Perfected Perfecto challenges traditional gender norms by combining the hyper-masculine image of the 1950s biker jacket with the delicate symbolism of twentieth century tutus. The 1970s British punk movement, which already rejected these norms and embraced androgyny, is used as a design methodology to combine these two concepts. The focus is on garment and construction research. Elements of the biker jacket, such as zipped cuffs, wide lapels, multiple pockets and belts, are contrasted with the pleats, gathers and embroidery of the tutu. These details are then further reimagined through material experimentation.
The biker jacket is recreated in soft tulle and adorned with lace and ruffles, while the tutu is made from leather and features spikes and studs instead of the usual lace and ruffles. Thus, the biker jacket becomes soft and flowing, while the tutu takes on a heavier, more angular form. Together, these inversions of material and silhouette encourage a re-examination of traditional gender constructs, offering a fresh perspective on the boundaries of menswear design.
