The former conservatory is bathed in suffocating heat. The paper taped to the windows and the survival blankets hastily stretched out have done nothing: the plants have fled. The remnants of the plants are all over the place. There are traces of citrus and succulents, plants that used to shelter there in winter. You can also make out the silhouettes of rosemary and lavender, mimosa and witches’ claws. Endemic species are mixed with newcomers, exotic, invasive or already common.
These ornaments tell the story of Provençal flora: both the fantasy of its spectacular evolution in response to the climate, and the complexity of its current reality. The ground shows the early departure of the plants. Leaves, spines and roots are strewn about, both fossils and imprints. The uprights of the greenhouse display a wide variety of species, with patina effects reminiscent of primitive painting.
At dusk, when the heat becomes bearable, we discover an office summarily created between two old planters, cushions and seats suggesting the occupation of its new occupants. They are probably busy botanists, as can be seen from the prevailing disorder.
We want this winter garden to tell several stories simultaneously: the story of uprooting and profound transformation of the space, and the story of Provençal flora constantly reinventing itself in new arrangements.
