“Daughters of Eve” by Michel Olivier, 1952

In August 1952, director Michel d’Olivier films on the Île du Levant a film written from a screenplay by Jean-Albert Foëix. Titled “Daughters of Eve,” starring three main actresses, it is the first French naturist film.

Three pretty girls, Gisèle, Flore and Béatrice, spend their vacation with the naturists of the Île du Levant. They are welcomed by Moustache, the island’s friendly guide.

This short film (23 minutes) was entirely filmed on the Île du Levant from the Titans Lighthouse to the Bellevue Hotel.

Claire Lescot, an adored opera singer rejects the advances of men who admire her and offer her all their treasures. Madly in love but ignored by the beauty who only thinks of dominating her suitors, Einar Norsen, a young scientist, threatens to commit suicide. He fakes his death by letting his car plunge into a river. Shame and scandal overwhelm the singer who is booed at her performance. Devastated, she grieves and becomes increasingly interested in the fate of the unfortunate man who proves to be alive, stoking the jealousy of the sinister Indian maharajah Djorah de Nopur who had been her favorite until then. Bitten by a venomous snake hidden in a bouquet of flowers, she is taken dying to the young scientist’s futuristic laboratory. He sets a complicated machinery in motion to restore her to life and finally hear, from the lips of the tamed inhuman woman, an admission of her affection.
