Coco Capitán, Apartamento, La Casa Dalí
Last summer, Seville-born photographer Coco Capitán travelled to the shores of Spain’s Costa Brava to portray the home of one of the twentieth century’s most distinctive artists, Salvador Dalí. Located in the Mediterranean village of Portlligat, the house was purchased in the early thirties, and together with his wife, Gala, the artist remodelled and expanded what was originally a small fisherman’s hut, transforming it into an unparalleled abode that would become the couple’s primary residence and workspace.
Coco’s pictures capture the artist’s home in the same golden light that inspired him to create some of his most famous paintings. These photos are witness to the grandeur of the artist’s home as a site of active creation—both of life and of art—where the worn ephemera of Dalí’s studio appear alongside images of his infamous taxidermy collection, the iconic couch modelled after Mae West’s mouth, and the characteristic white exteriors among olive groves.
Encapsulated in the book Casa Dalí, published by Apartamento in 2023, these images take on new life in this first public, sprawling exhibition. Spread throughout the streets of Toulon, the exhibition « Apartamento Presents: Casa Dalí by Coco Capitán » traces a transcendent dialogue between the photographer and the artist throughout the corners and nooks of the city, inviting us along for a journey across different artistic disciplines and coastal towns bound by that same Mediterranean sun.
